The Apothecary Diaries Maomao Figure Review: Is Taito's Gekkei Version Worth It?

If you’re a fan of The Apothecary Diaries, you’ve likely been waiting for a figure that captures Maomao’s unique charm—her sharp wit, her calm demeanor, and that iconic apothecary look. Taito’s Gekkei version, released as part of their prize figure lineup, has been generating buzz among collectors. But does it live up to the hype? In this review, we’ll break down the sculpt, paint application, pose, and overall value to help you decide if this Maomao figure deserves a spot on your shelf.

Taito has built a reputation for producing high-quality prize figures that often rival more expensive scale figures. The Maomao figure is no exception, featuring a dynamic yet elegant pose that reflects her character’s personality. But as with any collectible, there are pros and cons. Let’s dive into the details.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The Maomao figure arrives in a compact, well-designed box that features artwork of the character. The packaging is sturdy and does a good job of protecting the figure during shipping. Inside, you’ll find the figure pre-assembled, which is typical for Taito prize figures. The base is simple but effective, featuring a clear plastic disc that allows the figure to stand securely without distracting from the design.

Upon first inspection, the figure’s pose immediately catches the eye. Maomao is depicted in a mid-walk stance, with one hand raised as if she’s about to examine something—a nod to her inquisitive nature. The dynamic pose adds a sense of life to the figure, making it stand out among more static poses. The overall proportions are well-balanced, and the figure feels solid in hand.

• Dynamic walking pose that captures Maomao’s character
• Compact packaging with character artwork

Sculpt and Pose Accuracy

One of the most important aspects of any figure is how accurately it represents the source material. Taito’s Maomao figure does an excellent job in this regard. The facial expression is spot-on—calm, slightly aloof, with that hint of intelligence that fans know and love. The hair is sculpted with fine details, capturing the flowing strands and the distinctive side braid that Maomao often wears.

The outfit is equally impressive. The apothecary’s robe is sculpted with realistic folds and creases, giving the figure a sense of movement. The accessories, such as the small pouch at her waist, are detailed and add to the overall authenticity. The pose, while dynamic, doesn’t compromise the figure’s stability—she stands firmly on her base without any wobble.

• Accurate facial expression and hair sculpt
• Detailed outfit with realistic folds
• Stable standing pose despite dynamic action

Paint Application and Color Accuracy

Paint quality is often where prize figures can fall short, but Taito has stepped up their game. The Maomao figure features clean, crisp paint application with minimal overspray. The colors are vibrant and match the anime’s palette—the pale pink of her hair, the muted browns of her robe, and the subtle skin tones all look natural.

The eyes are particularly well-painted, with sharp pupils and a gentle gradient that gives them depth. The shading on the clothing and hair adds dimension, making the figure look more expensive than it actually is. While there are a few minor imperfections—such as slight paint smudges on the sleeves—they are barely noticeable unless viewed up close. Overall, the paint job exceeds expectations for a prize figure.

• Clean paint application with minimal overspray
• Accurate color matching to the anime
• Detailed eye paint with gradient shading

Value for Money and Collectibility

Taito prize figures are known for their affordability, and the Maomao figure is no exception. Priced significantly lower than scale figures, it offers excellent value for fans who want a high-quality representation of their favorite character without breaking the bank. Given the sculpt and paint quality, this figure could easily pass for a much more expensive release.

For collectors, this Maomao figure is a must-have, especially if you’re building a The Apothecary Diaries collection. Its dynamic pose and accurate portrayal make it a standout piece. Plus, Taito figures often become harder to find after their initial release, so grabbing one early is a smart move. Similarly, the Maomao figure benefits from the same attention to detail, ensuring that fans of various series can expect a high standard.

Another great example is the Mobile Suit Gundam Genkai Toppa RX-78-2 Gundam Figure, which demonstrates Taito’s versatility in capturing both mechanical and organic forms. While the Maomao figure is more focused on character expression, it still holds its own against these other releases, proving that Taito consistently delivers quality across different genres.
